Butterfly Pavilion
Butterfly Pavilion
Inspired by the layered structure of a pinecone, Butterfly Pavilion transforms this motif into the image of delicate, overlapping butterfly wings. Organized as a light and open structure resting gently upon the lawn, establishing a direct dialogue between architecture and landscape.
Built from sustainable Accoya wood, the structure is hand-crafted and sculpted into form. Over a triangular framework, a network of cables is arranged across the frame, allowing each wooden slat to weave through the intersections and lock into place. Together, they form a unified architectural volume a clear expression of Kengo Kuma’s signature approach to connecting material, craft, and form.
